As March begins, many students are beginning to hear talk of “Never Again” walk outs. However, many are unaware of exactly what these walkouts symbolize and whether or not any disciplinary action will be taken against those engaging in this peaceful protest. We have those details for you:
On Valentines Day, a 19-year-old male opened fire on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, leaving 17 students and faculty members dead, making this the deadliest school shooting since Sandy Hook. Alyssa Alhadeff, a 14-year-old soccer player. Scott Beigel, a geography teacher. Martin Duque Anguiano, a sweet, caring little brother whose family lacks the funds for a proper funeral. Nicholas Dworet, a prospective member of the University of Indianapolis’ swim team. Aaron Feis, a football coach who sacrificed himself, shielding two students from oncoming bullets. Jaime Guttenberg, a loving daughter and sister. Chris Hixon, an athletic director who treated every student like his own child. Luke Hoyer, the boy with a constant smile and a contagious laugh. Cara Loughran, a passionate dancer. Gina Montalto, a member of the marching band’s winter guard and a gifted artist. Joaquin Oliver, a Venezuelan student who enjoyed football, soccer, and hip hop. Alaina Petty, a member of the junior ROTC who loved to serve others. Meadow Pollack, a senior who had been accepted into Lynn University. Helena Ramsay, a brilliant and witty family girl. Alex Schachter, a trombone player in the marching band. Carmen Schentrup, a national merit scholar semifinalist. Peter Wang, a 15-year-old boy who enjoyed participating in ROTC and culinary art. These are the victims of this horrific event. All over the country, students are calling for increased gun control in order to prevent further shootings. Therefore, on March 14, exactly one month following the Parkland shooting, there will be a national school walkout. Students are urged to exit classes at 10:00 AM and remain outside for exactly 17 minutes, 1 minute for every life lost. Students pushing for increased gun control hope that this movement will push Congress to pass stricter legislation. Students of East Hamilton should know that according to Mrs. Chuy, there will be no disciplinary action taken against any students participating in peaceful protest. In fact, when interviewed, Chuy expressed her support for students who are choosing to stand up for the social issues they believe in. Students are, however, urged to follow instructions that will be given in the following weeks in order to help the walk out run smoothly and to ensure the safety of each student. To anyone who believes greater gun regulation is an important step to take in order to protect the lives of American students, consider participating in this walkout.

The parents of 13 brothers and sisters were found abused and malnourished in a home in Perris, California. David Turpin, 57, and Louise Turpin, 49, raised their children in a poor environment and in filth. The children were not fed properly and chained to furniture. Their 17 year old daughter grabbed a cell phone and jumped out of a window to call 911. She told police that her and her 12 siblings were held hostage by their parents and chained to the bed. She told police she planned on escaping for 2 years and a sibling fled with her, but was scared so she returned home. The children ranged from 2-29, but they all looked very young considering they were so skinny. All children showed symptoms of severe malnourishment and mental impairment. The family would go to bed at 5 a.m; sleep all day, and be awake all night. The children would only shower once a year. The neighbors say that the family were sweet and an ordinary family. Their family are shocked by the news and haven't visited them in years. What do we have to do to prevent this in the future? Do you communicate with your neighbors? Do you talk to your long distance family occasionally? In order to prevent this from happening, be sure to communicate with the people around you and keep your eyes open for any suspicious activity. Always remember to keep in touch with your family and spend time with them whenever you can. Spending time with your family can create memorable experiences. Of these cases, more than 90% of perpetrators walk away without any consequence, constructing a message that conveys that sexual assault is acceptable.
In recent cases, the urgency of sexual assault has been brought to light by mainstream media. With the abrupt firing of Matt Lauer, Matt Zimmerman, and many other well-known celebrities, Hollywood is making it clear that sexual harassment will no longer be tolerated; not only in their environment, but in America as a whole. By publicly addressing this issue, they are raising awareness for a subject that impacts nearly all men, women, and even children in the United States. And recently, with the case of Larry Nassar, his trial has served as one of the largest displays of justice for victims of this abuse. Larry Nassar, 53, completed his medical degree at Michigan State in 1993. He became the USA Gymnastic National Team physician in 1996, performing medical care for the USA gymnasts. He rose to the top as a doctor, and was highly respected as one of the most professional and competent doctors in the industry. Larry Nassar has recently been sentenced to 175 years in prison. He was first arrested in November 2016 on three counts of first degree criminal sexual misconduct. Larry Nassar spent two decades working behind the USA Gymnastics National Team, and during this time, sexually abused over 150 young girls. Many of the girls claimed that they had no idea that Nassar was committing such wrongdoings, as he would behave as though all acts were purely for medical reasons. By sending Nassar to prison until the day of his death, the court system has proven that victims will be brought justice and that tolerance for perpetrators will be non-existent. NATIONAL SEXUAL ASSAULT HOTLINE: 800-656-4673 YouTube: It’s Not Just About America’s Funniest Home Videos and Cats Anymore.By: Samantha Goe1/19/2018 In recent years YouTube’s successes has skyrocketed, especially with younger generations. But is this really a good thing? Is YouTube and it’s content creators (YouTubers) influence on children and teens good or bad, or can it be both?
Does anyone remember back in the early 2000’s when YouTube was just a place to go for you to watch music videos or instructional dance videos so you could dance along with the cast the next time you watched High School Musical? Well, those days are long gone. In recent years YouTube has become a social media platform for original content creators (YouTubers) to make and upload their own videos that are viewed by millions daily, most of whom are children and teens. Recently there has been a big uproar surrounding a certain YouTuber, who’s main audience is younger kids, uploading an insensitive and disrespectful video. YouTube has punished the content creator, making a public statement expressing their sorrow, promising a video like this will never circulated on their platform again, and taking actions to punish the creator himself. Because of this video more people are starting to see the impact YouTube has on kids and are wondering if the streaming site is actually okay for their children to watch. A random assortment of students and teachers were chosen for a poll and were given a list of top YouTubers and a list of very influential celebrities and they were asked to rate them on a scale of 1-10 based off who influences kids more (1 being the most influential and 10 being the least) and out of the people that answered 100% gave the top three spots to YouTubers. These people were also asked if they think the influence kids are getting is good or bad. Sarah Wahrmund, a sophomore at EHS, was asked what her opinion was and that is that it can be both, “There are some who use their influence to do good and spread good.” A lot of people that don’t regularly watch YouTube may see an article about the aforementioned disrespectful and insensitive video and think that that is what all YouTubers are like however. There are also videos that focus on things like mental health awareness and the importance of it and videos that YouTubers make to really try to help people. However, Sarah also states that there are the ones that just set a terrible example for their impressionable audiences. Is the influence the consequence of YouTube itself or from it’s individual YouTubers? Mrs. Maples, Creative Writing teacher here at EHS, also thinks that there are good things and bad things about YouTube. For instance, the way that her son learns how to play his favorite songs from YouTube videos is great, but some of the videos that her daughter watches may not be too bad themselves but because of YouTube’s autoplay feature could lead to things she shouldn’t be seeing. She also stated that she hears students talking more about Youtube censations than actual celebrities, like those seen on film or in music. What’s your opinion on YouTube? Leave a comment bellow. By Stefani Lazarevic http://www.bishop-accountability.org/news2011/images11/2011_11_28_WashingtonTimes_AnEnd_ph_Image1.jpg Sexual assault and harassment cases have been all over the news for quite a while and a big problem the world has been dealing with for a long time. Sexual assault and harassment has been apparent in places like the work force and schools and it’s time to put a stop to it.
Sexual harassment has been a big topic on the news lately. Many young kids and adults get sexually harassed daily. Sexual harassment has been a big problem in the work force and in schools and it’s time for it to stop. When a sexual harassment incident is reported at the school there are very strict steps that the administration must follow in order to resolve the issue. Principal Chuy discussed the process in which the schools handles sexual harassment allegations: “We have to verify that it is, in fact, sexual harassment and interview everyone that we can that was involved or a witness to the incident. We have to give due process to the harasser because they have rights to, then we have to determine, if it is sexual harassment, it can go anywhere from a short term to a long term suspension it depends on the situation. Many times middle schoolers don’t understand what sexual harassment is so we have to educate them because, we don’t just want to punish people we want to change the behavior because if they don’t understand the seriousness of it we need to educate them in that way.” Many people might not be aware of the difference between sexual harassment and sexual assault. Both are very serious issues. “Sexual assault the victim has the right to not be in the school with the accused. There is a lot of legal issues once you get into sexual assault, sexual harassment can lead to that depending on the varsity.” If you or someone you know is experiencing this and doesn’t feel comfortable talking to someone in person call (800)-656-HOPE which is the phone number for the National Sexual Assault Hotline or go to their website https://www.rainn.org/ By Ireland Waddle November 15th, 2017 http://cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/170524204917-hurricane-igor-large-169.jpg Even though school has just begun, so much has happened in just the short span of three months. During this short span of time there have been three hurricanes within a few days of each other and a huge wildfire that spread all throughout Northern California. Beforehand there was an outbreak of three hurricanes in Florida/Louisiana, Texas, and Puerto Rico, which killed thousands of people.
The hurricanes were so bad that Puerto Rico lost so much that it was apocalyptic. The damage and recovery was so vast that it is still in the process at the moment. Following up after the hurricanes in september a huge wildfire in California broke out on October 14, killing 43 and causing 90,000 to evacuate their homes and belongings. Not only did the fire affect the environment around it, but it also affected far-reaching surroundings because of the rise in pollution from the outbreak. These natural disasters affected the areas that they hit and the whole earth because of the rise in pollution from the fires reaching the ozone layer according to wildfire today. Debri from the hurricane is just piling up, causing many safety and health hazards. Photo caption: Nikkis Wives rocking out (picture by:Taryn Robinson)
By: Taryn Robinson, Sam Goe, Lillie Hardy, Harrison Ivins, Ireland Waddle Drake Bell’s presence at our school didn’t go unnoticed, and the artists accompanying him didn’t either. East Hamilton had a huge music festival right before fall break, a massive event that took up the last part of the school day, and featured talented performers that were full of energy, and the intention to spread a message about the arts. This festival was put on by a company called HighSchoolNation Arts, a company that travels around to different high schools playing concerts for the students in an effort to promote arts education in schools. The company travels with a bunch of up and coming artists and one big headliner, the headliner for this tour was Drake Bell, and some Eye of the Storm staff members had the pleasure and privilege of being able to go backstage to meet and interview some of the amazing talents that performed. One person that seemed to be quite popular with the Eastham Fam is a 17 year old girl from California by the name of Kerri Medders. Kerri is a solo artist who is originally from Houston, TX but moved to L.A. at 10 and got involved with HighSchoolNation when, as she tells it, “I had produced my EP, Lot 17, and I went on a website called sonicbids, which is like a festival platform for gigs, and I ended up submitting my music on sonicbids and then they opened it up and asked if I wanted to perform on their lineup.” HighSchoolNation is Kerri’s first big tour however, before joining them, she played gigs at places like House of Blues, different coffee shops, and other places in L.A. to spread her music. Something else that Kerri commented on was the role of female artists in society for other young women when she said, “I’m a huge advocate of girls supporting girls is my big thing because, I feel like we’re one of those groups that if we come together and do what we do well together we could conquer the world.” After this, Kerri was asked about who inspires her when it comes to her music which she responded to by telling a story from her childhood about how she would always ask her parents to take her to places like Hard Rock Cafe or Fuddruckers where they had walls filled with all the greats from Rock N’ Roll history just so she could go and stare at all the artists that inspire and know that she’ll be up there, right next to them, someday. Kerri not only does music though, she also acts and is currently in a show called Seal Team on CBS as well as a new Netflix series coming out in 2018 called Alexa and Katie. If you want to follow Kerri online all of social media is under her name, Kerri Medders. Evan Cole was another artist that we got to speak to at the event. Evan is a 17 year old junior in high school from St. Louis who plays soulful pop music and started to do contemporary music on the piano at age 14. Evan told us that he is actually going to a high school, not online or homeschool, and doing the tour at the same time and when asked how he handles that he stated, “It’s very tough but, there’s this thing called blackboard online and it’s a calendar where you can see all your homework and you can just get it done on the road and i have to submit it online so it’s a little more difficult than being in a classroom.” Evan also spoke to us about the support he has had from his parents with everything he has done ever since he started to do musical theatre at age 7 to getting involved in contemporary music at 14 to now. When he first started to perform music he would street perform in his hometown at places like the Cardinal's stadium before and after games as well as being a part of his schools all boys accapella group, playing at local bars, taverns, and festivals then got involved with HighSchoolNation after submitting an application and getting chosen out thousands of other people. Some of the artists that Evan is a fan of and that inspire him are Gavin Degraw, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, as well as just watching other artists in general and seeing them do what they do and being inspired by their songs. If you want to follow Evan on social media, his instagram is Evan Cole Music and his snapchat is evancole53. Another act that a lot of people liked was a group from Canada called Nikki’s Wives and we were able to speak with their drummer, Nate Baylor. Although Nikki’s wives have only been together for about two years, they’ve already created a base for their fame. Their pop rock style is definitely a good sound to the ears, and their energy on the stage is almost as wild as they are. Their merch includes the bible verse Deuteronomy 17:17 is a play on the name “ Nikki’s Wives”, because the verse says, “Thou shall not have multiple wives”. Another interesting fact about them is that Nikki (lead vocals) always wears black to represent the groom, and Nate (the drummer) and Dylan (Guitarist) wear white to represent the Bride. Before HighSchoolNation they went on tour with Ceelo Green, and they have tour dates coming up. The music festival was a huge success school-wide, and while many positive things were said about the performers, the performers themselves also had very nice things to say about the East Hamilton student body as well. Drake Bell himself said that we were a great audience and that he was surprised by the maturity of the students--a huge compliment to us all. We found a way to make this awesome event happen, and that is due to the kindness of administration. Please make sure that you thank them every chance you get, because it’s because of them that we were all able to experience something as awesome as this. Here at East Hamilton there is always something going on but this time something special is going to happen that has never happened here before. On Saturday November 4th the PTA is holding our first fall fundraiser festival. It is going to be held after the 5k run. There also will be a 1-mile fun run held after the festival. There will be a games, food and lots of fun. PTA member over the fall festival , Ms Holley Cox says “The main purpose of Cane Chaos is to incorporate the 5k that was previously the Candy Cane Dash and fall featival into our primary fundraiser for the fall. We also want to invite the community to come and be apart of what is happening at EH.” All the money made at the fundraiser goes to the school, and for the actual festival , the money will be donated to the individual groups who set up booths:The PTA works to help raise funds for projects at EH that benefit faculty and students. This particular event is unique because it encourages the student organizations to create a fun booth to engage attendees. Each student group has been invited to participate in the festival and gets to keep the money they make on their booth.” The goal of this festival to hopefully have a lot of people come and have a great time. Ms. Holley Cox talks about her goals for the festival…”We are hopeful that not only will the Cane Chaos raise money for EH, we also want to engage the community and create a connection between them and our school. Finally, by inviting students to take part we hope to build school spirit and entrepreneurship among the groups. The Cane Chaos will have many local vendors selling their products, food, vendors, fun activities, and games for all ages.” To conclude, make sure you come out to the run and the festival to have some fun and support EH. For the first time EVER East Hamilton is holding it’s very own flea market.
Ms. Anderson,The MS cheerleading coach, has decided to put on a flea market right here in at our school THIS saturday from 9-3:00 p.m in the teacher parking lot. The Flea market will consist of clubs from inside and outside of the school , and has been advertised in chattanooga and cleveland. Ms. Anderson has also invited the police and fire department out to interact with the community in hopes of bringing the community together while also raising money for school clubs , and anyone else who wants to come and sell any items. She has received lots of support from mostly outside of the school , and in the community so she has a good feeling that this will turn out good. In case of bad weather the flea market will be moved to NEXT saturday , and everything else will remain the same. On Friday, August 25th, Hurricane Harvey ripped through Texas, destroying the land, destroying hope, and killing at least 70 people in it’s wake. A tragedy, meteorologists were calling Harvey the worst flood storm ever, and the nation watched as the Lone Star State became practically completely emerged under water.
We all felt the effects of the hurricane two weeks ago, paying more for gas and getting quite a bit of rain ourselves, even in Tennessee. And now, another hurricane, Irma, approached the United States, and left even more damage. Harvey was documented as a category 3 hurricane, and Irma at one point was being addressed as a category 5, plummeting straight towards Florida at rapid speeds of 180 mph. The last cat. 5 hurricane that went through the U.S. was in 2005, known as the monster hurricane Katrina. Nearly 2000 people died in the storm's path of destruction, and cost over 100 billion dollars in damages. It was a historic storm that shocked the world, and went down in the books as one of the worst storms in US history. As Irma approached, Florida evacuated their people to go further north, out of the path of the storm. Gas and plywood were nowhere to be found as everyone frantically fled the state in desperate attempt to get somewhere safe. From the East Hamilton newspaper, we ask you all to please stay safe during these storms. Our thoughts are with the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and we are asking for donations for those who have lost their homes, and their loved ones. Diapers, wipes, bottled water, peanut butter and jelly, etc. is all being asked for, and all of your contributions would be greatly appreciated not only by the staff, but the sufferers. You can leave your donations with your first period teacher! |
