Jessica Hawkins, a fellow 10th grader at East Hamilton, was nominated among other students (such as Sarah Locklear, Stefani Lazarvic, and Reagan Oliver) by Mr. Sullivan to go to a Harvard campus tour over the summer. This tour was to give students experience in an Ivy League school and witness every day life on the Harvard campus. When interviewed, Jessica gave us her input and thoughts on how the experience impacted her.
Hawkins was questioned if she was surprised that Mr. Sullivan picked her as one of the nominees and she replied, “Yes! I was new to the school last year and I didn’t really think that my teachers noticed me because of that. It was nice to find out that not only did Mr. Sullivan notice me but also saw my potential in going into the Harvard program. I felt really honored, like the other nominees I’m sure, to be one of the select few chosen for this.”
When she was asked if the trip was beneficial to her personally, she replied, “It was definitely a useful experience that helped me to advance my people skills. It allowed me to see what the Harvard campus, or an Ivy League campus in general, was like first-hand. I am naturally an introverted person so this enabled me to get out of my comfort zone and explore new things in a different educational environment.”
The question was raised whether Jessica Hawkins would recommend the trip to her other fellow students. She answered, “I would highly recommend going to the campus tour for advancing abilities that students wouldn’t really gain in a classroom such as leadership. This is really important in jobs of business and overall to become a better person. This program can give people an experience of what college life is like in an educational and fun way.”
We posed the question of whether Harvard was the main college Hawkins was setting her sights on, she retorted, “No, definitely not. I really liked the experience I got from the campus tour, but I don’t think it swayed my views on the college I want to go to. I like the overall environment of Harvard and the opportunities you could gain but it’s not the school that I plan to be in. I’m more focused on getting into Georgetown of Washington D.C.
