East Hamilton’s art program has always produced talented young artist. They get exposed to different types of art like drawing, painting, sketching, etc; but one part of the program is incorporating technology in their art with the new E-Lab, which is sculpture. The art department has always had sculpture but according to Brenda Zaragoza “we have only used clay, cardboard, and wires in our projects.” Zaragoza has been apart of the art program for four years and has taken 6 art classes, so this is a different experience for her since she has used the same technique with sculpting two years in a row, “We get to be more hands on with machines and learn how to use technology like the laser.”Art has always been an outlet for Zaragoza to express herself through creativity, “Art is whatever you want to do draw or paint, but when you sculpt you get to physically see your art, like touch, feel the texture of it and you can appreciate it a little more.”
Emily Nguyen is also an art student, who has been a part of the program for four years. “This is my first time sculpting and my bird house is looking really good.” Nguyen has only had experience in art one, two, and three; which consisted of only drawing and painting. SInce this is a different experience Nguyen has had a better appreciation for sculpting and she believes “painting is more challenging than sculpting because it's more physical, it's up to your eye more, and you get to feel out what you make.” The beginning of sculpting isn’t tedious, Nguyen expressed how Mr.Boals helped them draw out there bird house, how to cut wood, and how to use the laser.
The E-Lab has improved our students mind by teaching them that technology is a way of art. It also gives the art program a future to become better. The E-Lab can teach the students how to do web designs, T-shirt designs, wood carving, laser carving and other futuristic type of art.
